Relaunch Of Samson 9:45 Parallel Run

Relaunch of Samson

Saturday 21st April

Our mountain class locomotive, Samson, will be back riding the rails after its full in-house overhaul.

Samson last pulled carriages in 2013 towards the end of its then ‘current’ boiler certificate.

Parallel Run tickets include:

  • Romney Rover Ticket
  • Guaranteed seat on the 9:45 steam departure from New Romney to Hythe running parallel to Samson.
  • Adult: £20.00
  • Child (3-15years): £10.00
  • Concession: £18.00

Standard fares apply for all other journeys.

Samson, rather unusually for the British railway scene, is a 4-8-2 mixed traffic loco designed to haul shingle trains from the coast at Dungeness (now Britain’s only designated desert because of the fauna that survives there) to Hythe, our terminus and most popular station close to the M20 motorway and with local bus links to the National Rail system. The aggregate traffic did not survive long and since she has worked passenger trains like her sister Hercules (also the motive power for the world’s smallest armoured train used actively during WW2) alongside the magnificent fleet of eight pacific locomotives the railway is fortunate enough to own.

However, Samson has another claim to fame. She is the latest of the railway’s locomotives to be given a major overhaul in our own workshops and the quality of what has been achieved is second to none.

On this day we’ll be celebrating Samson with a special timetable including a parallel run. To guarantee a seat on the parallel run pre-book your tickets here www.rhdr.org.uk
